Engelmar Unzeitig
* 1911 in Hradec nad Svitavou, +1945 in Dachau
He was one of the most prominent personalities of nearby Zadní Zvonková, where he came as a pastor in 1940. He openly opposed Nazism, for which he was arrested by the Gestapo a year later and imprisoned in the Dachau concentration camp, where he survived for four years. In 1944, typhus spread in the camp. Father Unzeitig himself volunteered to help a sick fellow prisoner. Fellow prisoners called Unzeitig a saint and an angel from Dachau. After some time, he contracted the disease and died shortly before the liberation of the camp in 1945. His ashes were smuggled from Dachau to Würzburg, where his canonization process began in 1991. Pope Benedict XVI confirmed Unzeitig's heroic virtues and martyrdom in the Vatican, and in 2016 he was beatified in Würzburg, Bavaria. In the church in Zvonková you will find his memorial plaque and a stained glass window with his depiction.
