Kilián „Franz“ Nowotny

Šumava goods and people smuggler, and agent of the American intelligence service CIC. He lived with a woman in a homestead in Pláně and occasionally earned extra money by smuggling across the border into Bavaria. He returned after the war spent as a member Wehrmacht, but in 1946 the whole family was deported to Bavaria. He settled near the border in Röhrnbach, where he established a timber wholesaler. After the coup in 1948, he transferred American secret agents or emigrants fleeing the communist regime across the border. He used the alias Franz. In 1950, he was wounded in a shootout with members of the border patrol near Františkov. Thanks to his knowledge of the terrain, he managed to escape. He never returned to Czechoslovakia, but remained in contact with Czechoslovak emigration. Radio Free Europe in Munich and Vienna filmed a number of shows with him. In 1957, there was even an assassination attempt on him by the StB. Kilián's route started on the road from Vimperk, and went through the forests of the Jilmová and Kamenná hora hills, through Medvědí potok, around Michlova huta, between Kamenná and Bukovec hills, over the road from Borová Lada to Nová Huť, through Chalupská slať to Janská mountain and to the settlement Františkov. After crossing the Vltava river to Stolová and Stanová mountains, to the road between Bučina and Kvilda across the state border in the area of the Vltava springs.
